Catalyzing automotive circular ecosystems: Recyclability and recycled content with polyurethane

Sustainable interior design & materials
The ELV Regulation will require increased recycling of automotive plastics and compulsory integration of recycled content in the plastics used in vehicles. Polyurethanes (PUR) being the second most used plastic in cars, this is of particular importance for the automotive supply chain. The presentation will look at the latest developments for recycling of PU foams from ELVs, illustrated by concrete examples from a research project led by EURO-MOULDERS; show how high-quality foams with recycled content can be produced; and consider what is needed in the automotive supply chain for recycling of polyurethanes to happen at scale in the future.
  • Data-driven examples will demonstrate that polyurethane foam from ELVs is technically recyclable
  • The latest initiatives in the PU foam recycling area
  • The necessity of initiatives focusing on seat design and further development of pilot-scale initiatives for better sorting of materials
