Spray transfer molding (STM) lightweight sustainable composite technology
BASF
When looking to increase the sustainable elements of vehicle design, all components come under the spotlight. At this year’s expo, don’t miss a visit to BASF to see how the company’s sustainable polyurethane technology is engineered to manufacture lightweight composites through spray transfer compression molding. Using cost-effective materials, the process is very simple, offering fast industry cycle times and allowing for maximum design freedom to produce an efficient low-emission end product.
BASF’s bio-based chemistry reduces the amount of petroleum-based products by replacing these with castor oil, a renewable raw material. When combined with a nonwoven natural-fiber mat, with or without paper honeycomb, the resulting design is an economical, lightweight sandwich construction that can achieve OEM sustainability requirements. BASF’s customer innovation laboratory is conveniently located in Southeastern Michigan and allows customers to conduct design of experiments and produce production-intent parts.
